Q.Cutting Hydrangea
I live in Scotland, UK. When is the best time to cut back two very large 10 year old hydrangeas? They have never been cut back, only the flowerheads cut in the spring. The low inner stems from the ground are brown with no growth. There are always plenty of flowers but this year the leaves are speckled with brown spots. They are a lovely feature in my front garden. I hope you can help and thank you in advance. If you wish a photo, please let me know, but it is dark outside now!
Kind regards.

The best time for yearly pruning depends on the type of hydrangea you have, but in the case of an overgrown hydrangea, the best option is to cut it back in late winter or early spring to just a few inches above the ground.
