Q.cutting asparagus

Anonymous added on July 23, 2015 | Answered

I cut my asparagus down in July after they grew about 4 feet high and had become fern like at the tops. About a week later, I had new growth and many small offshoots of asparagus from the main stem. My question is, should I not have cut the asparagus down this early? What do the offshoots mean to the strength of my asparagus?

Most asparagus is cut back in fall, so yes, this was a bit early. This article will provide additional information: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/asparagus/cutting-asparagus-foliage-back-in-autumn.htm
