Did the butternut tree die from disease? If so, it would be beneficial to solarize the soil first.
If not, you can choose plants that tolerate juglone, the toxin that is released by trees in the walnut family. Plants such as purple coneflower, calendula, sedum, daylilies, and hellebore are among them. Squash, carrots, and beans are among the vegetables that are tolerant.
