Q.Can I Make A Butterfly Magnolia Tree More Like A Shrub?
I have one acre of the worst land, flood down the middle, back is all sand, nothing is level, it’s very challenging. It’s also the first I have owned. The previous owners did nothing for the trees so most are dead, I have an area were I planted a yellow Butterfly Magnolia my husband bought, it’s just one straight trunk. I would like to make it more bush than trees that’s possible, and how would I do this? I just put it in the ground yesterday so assume I should give it some time to stretch first.

Changing the shape of a Magnolia is not recommended. This is especially true with a young specimen.
Shaping it this early will promote horizontal branching, which will make the tree prone to falling apart as it ages. It will, also, be inviting for infection, as Magnolias are susceptible to many.
