Q.Can Bromeliads Affect The Health Of Established Shrubs If Grown Too Close In Dense Numbers

Zone Suburb of Brisbane | Anonymous added on February 28, 2021 | Answered

Duranta is slowly dying, which is a very hardy shrub, and a tropical hibiscus has lost its healthy look, leaves are smaller with a crumpled look. Bromeliads are just the common everyday type which multiply and in both cases have become a very dense mass

If the bromeliads are forming this dense cover under the shrubs, yes, the bromeliads could be suffocating the shrubs' roots. Try removing the bromeliads that are in the root zone of the shrubs and replanting them elsewhere.
