I recently bought one and would like to know how to encourage blooming.

Camellias usually grow best in partially shaded areas in well-drained soil. Blooming should take place in early spring depending on the plant's maturity and whether it receives the proper growing requirements. Although not always necessary, pruning can sometimes help.
