I would like to remove some of the leaves around the flowers of the calla lilly, but
wonder it by cuttin these so I can view the flower better, if it would hurt the plant?

Yes. As with most plants (there are a couple of exceptions), injured leaves will first turn brown and then die. You can continue to trim the leaf down as it dies off but that will expose more and more of the stem.
