Burn barrel near vegetable garden

I am new to gardening. The ideal spot in my backyard for a vegetable garden is only about 5 feet away from where my neighbor has his burn barrel (he mostly burns yard debris, sticks, leaves, etc). Will the smoke from his burn barrel be harmful to my vegetables? Is this a safe spot or should I find somewhere else to plant my veggies?

It may have some effect on the garden. If you do have a better spot, then it might be best to move to that spot. The smoke and heat could do a little damage.
