gardenia bushes were overgrown by bushes

Question

Bought a house and my gardenia bushes were overgrown by bushes. I cut the bushes away but my gardenias are bare and stringy. What should I do?

You could prune any dead material from the bushes now.
Then after the flowers have faded at the end of the summer, prune the shrubs to more pleasing appearance.
