Bird of paradise plant

Question

We bought what we were told was a bird of paradise plant. But it does not look like the ones shown. The leaves are very lacy and the plant is now about 5 ft tall. Its branches are 1/2 around. They have to be staked or they could easily break. When it blooms, the flowers are a bright yellow and there are what looks like red fibers that cover the bottom of the flower. Can you tell me what plant this could be? Thank you for any help you can give me.
