Sounds like your soil needs to be amended before you plant the Gumpo azaleas, which, like the earlier-blooming varieties, prefer moist, well-drained soil with a pH between 5.2 and 6.0.

Adding amendments to your soil to improve drainage and lowering the pH will make your azaleas happy. Azaleas don't normally require fertilizer unless they show signs of nutritional deficiency.
