Q.Bad Soil

Zone 97080 | Steve Callier added on February 7, 2022 | Answered

We put new 4 way mix in new garden beds last year and when we went to clean them up the soil was full a white saw dust looking substance. Was coming up in solid chunks 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick. Anybody know what causes this? Other than taking it all out any way to fix?

It is mycelium from some kind of mold. Without taking it to a microscope or staining it, you likely won't get an ID.

However, the solution is simple. Take away the conditions that the mold likes and it will remain manageable.

Mold and plants will prefer two, very, different environments. If you see mold, that will mean that conditions are not suitable for plant life.

The soil, likely, remains too moist. If you cannot get the area to dry out, thoroughly, you might consider flooding it and turning it into a natural bog garden.
