Q.Are Japanese Lilac Tree Flowers Fragrant, Or Not?

Zone Zone 5 | Anonymous added on September 11, 2023 | Answered

On https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/lilac/japanese-lilac-information.htm, the article talks about Japanese tree lilac (Syringa reticulata) having “clusters of white fragrant flowers”. But on https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/lilac/japanese-tree-lilac-problems.htm, it is written that “Though most lilac blossoms are fragrant, the Ivory Silk flowers are not.” I’m confused. Thank you.

That is confusing! The 'Ivory Silk' lilac does have a fragrance, but not the heady scent of a traditional lilac. The Japanese lilac has a fragrance more like a privet.
