I was told that a cat could die if exposed to a calla lily. Is this true?

They are only harmful to cats if the cats eat them. They are fine being around them, they just can't snack on them. Normally cats leave plants alone, but if you have a cat that likes to nibble plants, you may not want to grow this plant.
