Q.Apple Tree Damage First Aid

Zone Zone 5 | Anonymous added on July 14, 2026 | Answered

Hello, I read your article about tree bark damage and this damage is a bit more. We recently planted a honey crisp tree and today a branch broke off at the trunk and took about 2 maybe 3 inches of bark and such with it going down. Basically it’s damaged as if I was intentionally cutting it and did not do the undercut 1st of the 3 cut method. I don’t think it is as deep as the heart wood but what do I know it is a new tree, only about 6′ tall and not big around. What first aid if any can I do? I saw the advice of making an oval but I am not sure how to correctly do that. Could I cut the broken branch at the collar and wrap it back over the wound? Sorry I am grasping at straws. Thanks.
