Q.Algae Water For Tomatoes

Zone Witham Essex England | Avesnes added on July 25, 2022 | Answered

I am growing tomatoes in large tubs standing in trays of water. With the hot weather, green algae has appeared in the water. Will the tomatoes absorb anything nasty from the greenish water… anything such that we shouldn’t eat the fruit? Thanks for any guidance

I would opt to kill and compost the algae, first. Should it start to grow in the soil, it will affect nutrient uptake of the plants. The risk would not be to YOUR health, rather, the plants' health.

Composting algae and pond scum will be a very beneficial way to add nutrients to the area, however.
