I have two Red Beauty holly trees. I planted them in spring along with a Blue Prince male holly. The Red Beauties came into berry. But why would the berries dry up? We are not in a drought. We have had a good bit of rain in the past month.
If you have had large amount of rain, it is possible that the roots are flooded. When roots can't "breathe", the plants act much like they are not getting enough water. Check the drainage in the area and work to improve it if you find it is a bit swampy.
Am I able to plant a holly bush in the ground outside in 30 degree weather? Or will this kill it?
While it is possible as long as the ground is still workable, it is really not advisable. The cooler temps and drier air will make it more difficult for the plant to establish a strong root system, which it would need to survive through the winter. It is better to wait for spring planting if possible. Perhaps, you could keep it in a container until then.
Is a Holly bush useful for anything other than looks? Is it good for medicinal purposes or other benefits to mankind?
I do not know of uses beyond decorative, but I am not an herbalist, so I cannot say for sure.
How late can I plant Holly bushes in northwestern VT? I am on the shores of Lake Champlain, and could be Zone 3 or 4. I'd like to plant them now.
It is too late to be planting them now. They will not be established before the winter sets in. I would recommend that you heel in the plants in a sheltered location (like near a wall or foundation) for the winter and plant them out in the spring. Holly berries turned black and fell off bush. What causes this and is there a remedy?
Usually if the berries start to have problems, it is because the plant is stressed, and it is trying to preserve itself. Check to see if the plant is too dry. These shrubs require more watering during fruiting, and if they do not get enough, the plant will abort its berries. I would also check for pests that could be attributing to this as well.
