How much clearance do I need for various vegetables in a container garden? In other words, does a tomato plant require two feet or four feet above the soil? How much clearance for snap beans, parsley, and other vegetables that grow well in small (1-2 gallon) containers? What vegetables would you recommend?
For growing vegetables, a 5 gallon size or larger is recommended. Here are some articles to help you:

How do you prevent blossom end rot on tomato plants?
This issue is due to a lack of calcium in the blossom end of fruits. It is also more prevalent on the first fruits to ripen. Improve the soil quality around your tomato plants, cut spots off the affected tomato fruits (or simply discard them), and salvage what you can of the crop. To improve the soil and prevent future problems, maintain adequate, consistent soil moisture through proper mulching and watering. This article will also help:

I've been reading much on preventing this problem & am trying things as preventative measures, rather than applying Band-Aids. Baby powder & powdered milk look promising in multiple ways. The talc fights bad bugs (a bit), sugars in the milk feed bad bugs what they can't digest & process, resulting in dead bugs & their moving.
Allegedly, these also fight blossom end tot & kill or drive away aphids. Bonus points there. away
What is the earliest date I can start planting vegetables in my garden in Long Island, New York, especially tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers and peppers?
About now is your last frost date, so as long as local weather is not below 50F on average, you can plant out now.

I have about 15 organic tomato seedlings that I started from seed. I moved them from the peat moss starter tray and into small soil pots (actually, half water bottles with a hole cut in the bottom for drainage). They have been struggling since I transplanted them, almost like they're sort of giving it a shot but they can give up at any moment. I bought a 2-oz. container of Schultz's 'Take Root' rooting hormone. Would this help or hurt them? Is there something I can do to improve their outlook? I've been growing from seed for the past few years, but this year's batch doesn't seem too happy.
The following articles should be of some help to you:

I would not apply any root hormone, as this could do more harm than good—burning up what remains of the seedlings.
Is it safe to use Sevin Dust around tomato plants? I have lost four plants this week. They were cut at the soil line.
