How long do I need to leave the black plastic on my prepared garden rolls to kill grass pieces. Grass is not rooted. I made an area in my backyard to plant a garden. I have thick grass and I did not dig it up and just tilled it. NOW I have all this grass that will grow if I don't kill it. I don't use chemicals. I raked and took out a lot of the grass that is broken up with big roots, but there is still plenty of grass. I tilled and tilled until dirt was powdery and then made rolls/hills and again picked out some of the grass with roots. I then wet ground and covered with black plastic.
Usually about a month or so is adequate for killing the grass.
I have a large tract of grass in my garden and would like to spend time growing vegetables rather than cutting grass (that's all I had time to do, now retired from sea, LOTS of time). I hope to provide most of our annual vegetables.

What seeds are good to start sowing now?
the best seeds would be any veggies and most herbs. also, fruits like melons and certain berries. strawberries are to late to plant now, they already have been harvested of most varieties. the best fruit would be melons of any type because they are a warm season fruit. basically, anything can be planted know except strawberries. it's not to late in the growing season. the latest time to plant will be mid to late june.

50' x 60' long, overgrown, untouched for 25 years. Moving in mid-October. Fencing first, then have to get rid of pernicious weeds, wild shrubs and turf, then lay paths. What are the immediate musts when we begin?
Take a good long look at the current garden area. See what plants or shrubs you really want to keep and what ones really are just too overgrown to keep. Make a plan of how you want the garden to look and what spacings you need for them to be healthy. Make a list of plants or shrubs to keep and those that must go for one reason or another. I would not put fencing first on the list unless you mean removing what is there. Placing a new fence up first would get in the way of the clean up and overhaul. Keep on target with your plan, if you make too many changes as you go, it can become a frustrating mess to deal with at some point.
