I have s sky pencil Japanese holly that the leaves are turning brown. I would like to know what type of plant food would turn the holly shrubs back green. Alice Robinson e-mail: aliceburtonrobinson@rcn.com
Check your plants for spider mites. Also, make sure the soil is well-drained; your plant could be experiencing root rot. If the plant just needs food, our experts suggest fertilizing with broadleaf evergreen fertilizer. See this article for more details:

Hi! Bought some new sky pencil japanese shrubs about 1 month ago and now their stalks are peeling. It seems the plants are getting weak and dying. Not sure if that is a natural process. See pictures attached. Thanks! Cicero
Unfortunately, your photos did not come through. I am unable to assess the damage. It does sound a bit like they have been overwatered, though. Depending on how far gone, and how much bark has peeled, they may not be able to be saved, but I cannot say for certain without seeing it.
A fungicide will be your best defense, but it may not save your shrubs.

Will Sky Pencil Holly survive Salt Lake City Utah winters if planted in the ground outdoors?
Yes, they are hardy in your zone. Here is an article that will help:

I just ordered 2 pencils to frame a window and wanted to know if they will have berries and if so, if they will shed.
If you happened to get the male hollies, they won't produce the insignificant black berries that are about pea sized.

I've had 4 pencil hollies growing on the south very tall solid brick south side of my home for the last 18 years or so. They break up the solid wall nicely. The last time I trimmed them 5-6 months ago I took 2-3 feet off the top of some and it didn't hurt a thing. The biggest problem is that they branch out at the top and up the sides. If I trimmed them every 3 months they would look better but I don't always have the time. What is the best way to trim them? Should I let new stems grow up or just keep leaves closely groomed on old growth. It's always been a chore to trim them so I wonder if it's worth it.
Once you trim them, you can't stop. This will be a constant process, but you will want to do so during winter dormancy, when the growth slows down to avoid the shrub losing its notable shape.

My Sky Pencil tree has a pest about 3/8” long. WE pick them off, but there are always more. We aren’t sure if they are eating leaves, stems or berries. HOW can we get rid of them? They blend in with leaves and look like a beetle but are triangularish . Thank You I’ll provide a picture
There are many things that you can do, both, natural and synthetic. Pyrethrins are my go to for most occasions, and you can extract your own from Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium! There are many, many options, though. This collection of articles will help:

The plant has been on my northeast-facing patio for about 3 months (over summer), most of the time naturally rain watered. It was in its nursery container, which I put inside a decorative pot. Today I was going to repot it, but I discovered that the leaves on the inner branches are all brown, whereas the ones on the outside branches are green and healthy-looking. I tried to shake off spider mites but I didn't find any. I pulled it out of the nursery container. The bottom of the root ball was wet, but I had watered it earlier today. The visible roots are whitish and there is no foul odor. Any idea what the problem is? Can it be saved?
When you water it, do you remove it from the outer pot? If not, there may be some root rot going on. Make sure to dump out the water in the outer pot after watering. You can trim off those brown shoots. Here is general care:
