The clover underneath will not affect the pussy willow
My pussy willow tree has not shown any new leaves this season and still has the flowers on its limbs but on the base of the tree is emerging shoots or suckers. Should I cut these off or allow them to grow please?
It depends on what shape you want your shrub to have. This article explains more about pruning pussy willow: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/pussy-willow/how-prune-pussy-willows.htm
We want to know when and how to prune a pussy willow tree. I have found directions for a bush, but not a TREE. Thank you.
Typically, the two terms (shrub/tree) are used interchangeably, so pruning is much the same. This article should help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/pussy-willow/how-prune-pussy-willows.htm
Should this dwarf weeping pussy willow have leaves. It's mid-May,. I'm in zone 6! It does have catkins! If it should have leaves now, so what could be the problem?
Yes, it should have leaves by now, but the winter was severe and affected many plants in unusual ways. Be patient, it will take its own time to do what it needs to do. I have let the tree go without proper trimming for 3 years now and it is out of hand. The growth is growing up instead of "weeping." How do I correct the growth and can I just cut back the side that is growing straight up?
Here is an article on pruning weeping shrubs of any kind: https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3A.edu+prune+weeping+pussy+willow&rlz=1C1CHUE_enUS486US486&oq=site%3A.edu+prune+weeping+pussy+willow&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i58.18511j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Tree looks dead, but has a lot of suckers coming around the base. Earlier I pruned but not since pussy's left. Should I cut suckers? Can this tree be saved. It is a focal point in a rock berm.
Apparently the main part of the tree was killed, probably by severe winter weather. However, if there are suckers coming up from the base, the roots are still alive and trying to grow a new tree. If you're willing to wait a few years, you can use those suckers to form a new tree. (Be aware that if your specimen was grafted, the new tree may not be as decorative as the earlier one.) Cut off all the suckers except for a few of the thickest -- I like to leave an odd number, 3 or 5 or even 7 -- up to you. Then go from there to grow a new bush. My spring growth is white but when I first planted this they were pink. Is there anything I can do to the soil to get them pink again?
Typically if a plant's flower seems faded, it is due to a lack of nutrients. I would fertilize the plant with a balanced fertilizer. If you can, get the soil tested as well to see if there are any micro-nutrients lacking.
