Grape honeysuckle, Lonicera reticulata is a vine that is native to the Midwest US and New York state. From what I just found, there is quite a buzz surrounding a cross between 2 different honeysuckles (Lonicera reticulata x L. prolifera) to produce what is called "Kintzley's ghost". I've attached links to articles on the species grape honeysuckle and the Kintzley's ghost. It can be grown up a trellis - it twines and doesn't dig into mortar or tree bark - or it can be grown on its own and will produce a mound of intertwined branches. Give it enough space so that it doesn't climb into nearby vegetation. The cross is relatively new to the nursery trade and I did not find specific information on how it performs in Virginia.
