My lavender plant is falling out from the center, leaving a hole in the center. Can it be saved?
This happens when the plant gets older. Most times, people choose to replace them, but you can try rejuvenation pruning. It can work sometimes. Cut back 1/3 of the branches by 1/3 to 2/3. Repeat in the spring and then next fall.
If you choose to replace them (they look nicer faster), you can help stave this off by making sure to give them a healthy haircut each year. This condition basically occurs because the plant is becoming woody. Regular pruning encourages new growth and discourages woody growth.
I just read on your site how to trim lavender. My plants are 1. 5 years old. I now know that I made a mistake and pruned them in their first year. Question: The plumes/sticks are about 10-14 inches high, flowers are dried. What should I do now?
If you have spent flower stalks on the plants now, just trim those off and leave the foliage. Pruning a lavender to the point where it has no foliage will most likely kill it, especially once winter arrives. In spring, you can cut the foliage back by one third to stimulate new growth.
It seems to be pretty healthy and has lots of blooms but is getting woody in the center. What can I do now?

Is September pruning bad for lavender? I recently moved into this home and didn't know what all was in my garden. The lavender has doubled in size and growing across the walkway.

I have had a lavender plant for the past couple of years. Last year is grew beautifully. I cut a lot of it and took it into the house. This year it is just a stub and nothing seems to be happening to it. Have I killed it? I live in southern Ontario.
pruning should not kill a lavender. If your winter was wet and cold, and the plant was less than very well drained, it drowned. Lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage, tarragon and oregano are notorious for dying during a wet cold winter.
