Is it damaging to the bushes to prune knockout rose bushes in the Fall? We have some in our community that have overgrown walkways and become hazardous to walking especially at night.
They are best pruned in the spring or when they are dormant. Pruning any plant in the fall can encourage new growth that won't be hardened off by winter, which can result in damage. However, for safety's sake, you should lightly prune them at any time.

Our knock out rose bush is 7 ft. tall and crowding out a butterfly bush. How far down can it be trimmed?
This will be done in two or three weeks from now, in the middle of February. You can cut these down all the way to about 12 inches from the ground if you'd like, but you don't have to take that much if you don't want to.
