My Hydrangea bush is about 3 years old. Plenty of wonderful leaves but very few (3) blooms during the summer. Seems very healthy except for blossoms. How do I prepare for winter?

I would be grateful if you could advise when and how I should prune my hydrangea. There appears to be a lot of advice but depends on the type of hydrangeas. My hydrangeas have new and old wood. On some of the new wood, there appears to be new shoots. What should I remove and what should I leave, and when should it be done? I attach two photos. Thank you for your assistance Geoff Mason
You can dead head and trim up all Hydrangeas when needed.
Remove any damaged or dean branches as needed.
Pruning recommendations are different for each variety.
If you really are unsure of the type of Hydrangea you have, and the bush needs to be cleaned up and size reduced, trim no more than 1/3 of the plant in one cutting. Do this after blooms have faded.

Here is how I like to treat cut Hydrangea!
When I cut them outdoors I put them in a bucket of fresh water.
After bringing indoors I recut the stems and place them in hot water for at least 15 mins.
Then I place them in fresh room temperature water and add floral preservative as directed on the package.
Every couple of days refresh the water and recut the stems if the flowers are wilting.
My hydrangeas are starting to get their leaves. When should I fertilize them?

We do not prune it. It looks like it is leafing out on new stems. What do I need to do? It should bloom blue.
Some hyndrangea grow flowers off of new wood and some of them will grow flowers off of old wood. Looks like yours grows flowers off of new wood. There is nothing you need to do except to be patient. :)

My hydrangeas have not leafed out yet. Just starting to sprout.
You can feed your hydrangeas with an acid fertilizer when buds start to swell so that fertilizer is available as the plant leafs outs and come into its most active phase of growth.
