I sprayed weed killer around my barberry and it appears to be dying, will this happen?
Most herbicides will kill anything it touches.
Avoid overspray onto your plants.

I have a large barberry bush that I'd like to trim waaaayyy back. It's approximately 4 ft high, 3-1/2 ft wide or so. It has not been pruned in many, many years. It is encroaching on an adjacent Japanese Maple (which I'd like to free up space around to encourage better growth). How far back can I successfully prune the barberry and when is the best time to do that? Thanks! Scott
It is a tough plant. I'd do it now and start at the bottom. Remove the oldest/fattest/worst thorny stems to the ground. Remove dead wood and branches that rub against each other or lean all the way across the plant then reduce the height to what you desire. Pruning stimulates new growth and if done late in the growing season, it will produce growth that doesn't have time to harden off before winter. Winter kill of the new growth invites disease.
Can a barberry shrub be split, half being replanted in order to propagate?
We have a huge amount of bearberry growing all over our back yard and I'd like to add it to the side of our house as well where I've dug up all of the old grass/moss etc. My questions are: 1) Should I put down new soil, or just leave what is there, minus the top growth? (I see that bearberry likes sand and poor soil so perhaps I shouldn't buy new rich soil) 2) If I dig down deep enough around a 1-2 foot section of the currently growing bearberry, do you think I could simply transplant plots of it into the new area? A soil test will help you determine if you need to amend the existing soil.
Your County Extension Office can help with a soil test for just a few dollars.

I always prune my bush in the fall. In the summer it seems to grow like crazy taking over space in the garden. Can I trim it back a little in July or august. I don't want to hurt through bush but would like to control it better.
There is a difference between pruning and trimming. Trimming is fine in July and August to control height. Pruning removes thick old canes and crossing branches to shape the overall plant and keep it vigorous. Prune in spring after blooming, or before it blooms if they aren't important to you. Any time you find dead or diseased branches, you should remove those promptly regardless of time of year.
