Will it be OK to use Preen to prevent weeds

Will it be OK to use Preen in the soil to help prevent weeds where I am planting hen and chicks? Is there a better way? I have removed all the hen and chicks, pulled out grass and dirt away from roots, and tried to remove stray grass roots from the soil. Should I replant them close or spread apart?

I would recommend you contact the customer service number at Preen.com
Growing your Hens and Chicks close together will cut down on weeds.
