wildlife pond

I have a small wildlife pond (4 metres x 2 approx.). It is about 10 years old and quite silted up, but I should get a few more years out of it before it turns into a bog garden and I have to start again. My problem is that it has become full of green algae. I can’t net it out, as it falls to bits. I thought of trying a chemical cleaner which is wildlife friendly (if there is such a thing) but as it is January, is it to early to try it? The newts should be coming back quite soon and the weed is tangled up with this stuff.

Please help!
Best wishes
Carol

I too have a small garden pond that gives me such pleasure and grief!

Do you run a pump and filter in your pond?
After cleaning the largest of litter out of the water, relying on the filter to clean the finest material is a process.
The filter needs flushing every day during the first days of cleaning, then less often.
Slowly the finest material is removed from the water.
Patience and a good pond filter is recommended from my experience.
