Why Doesn’t My Brown Turkey Fig Trees Fruit Not Ripen?

My brown turkey fig tree is 3 yrs old, I think, maybe 4 at most. It is in a very large pot and has grown to a height of 4ft. The leaves are lush and green. There is a large amount of fruit ranging from the size of a dime to just smaller than a golf ball. They are green and have been on the tree for a few months.

I fertilize with liquid fertilizer once a month or so and used a granular fertilizer in early spring of this year. The tree is very healthy and green (no leaf spots) just concerened about not getting any fruit from the dozens of them that are on the tree now. This same thing happened last year. Lots of fruit but none ever got bigger than a very large grape – most just fell off and then some would turn brown then fall off.

The tree gets 6-7 hrs direct sunlight and another 4-5 hrs of indirect. I had it in full sun all day but it was too harsh – the leaves would wilt and show signs of distress in the late afternoon, so it I moved it to get morning and mid afternoon sun then late day shade.  Other fig trees in my area are showing larger fruit and some are starting to turn colors. Am I not doing something the tree needs?

One thing that could be a factor is the size container in which your fig is growing. If the plant is under-potted, there is a possibility this could also affect the fruit not ripening. We have a 75 year old brown turkey fig, planted in full sun. Our growing season sometimes isn’t long enough for the fruit to ripen, or so we thought. We’ve started mulching heavily with pine straw and keeping the plant watered. We pull the mulch back from the plant in early April, fertilize and make sure it’s watered. Harvests have been incredible. With all the rain so far this year, we should have a bumper crop.
