why are my dates dropping prematurely?

my trees are over 20Y old (outdoors and ~20ft tall). i just baught the property and previous owner said that the two trees produce a huge ammount every year. there are lots of buds on the tree but they fall off very small. at this rate none of them will ripen.
how do i stop this? what am i doing wrong?
trees are irrigated regularly same as they have been in the last 20 years.
