White sticky stuff on jade

I have a healthy-looking jade plant that develops very sticky white blobs in the axles here and there. They are easy to remove with a Q-tip, but I need to know what is causing this phenomenon and how can I prevent it? Is it damaging to the plant?

Thank you very much.
