squash and melon runners

When squash and melons start to run, they have little curly stems that attach to the grass or ground. Do these supply nutrients to the plant or are they just to keep the runners from moving around or blown away from wind or hard rain? I ask this cause I am trying black plastic for weed prevention. Thank you.

The tendrils keep connect the plant to either the ground or it’s support system. Do not try to pull tendrils away if they have attached themselves, you could damage the vines.

You certainly can use a garden covering to help retain moisture and hold down weeds. I would look for products that are made for the garden.
