Also, if weather is severe, i.e. very windy or snow, it is an open area that would get the brunt of the weather. The location is in central New Jersey.

You will want an American Linden tree. If possible, look for the ‘Boulevard’ or ‘Douglas’ cultivar. These will be the most tolerant of your conditions.
