I have a wet and very windy side elevation to my garden. I am unsure what to plant. I have a paved area with intermittent spaces unpaved, approx. 24 x 24 inches to plant in. I would really like a tree for a center display.

The type of tree to plant is determined not only by the soil moisture, but also your average minimum winter temperature, and average summer high – this is called the USDA hardiness zone (if you’re in the US. Then you’ll want to think about the ultimate size of tree you want. Look for “height at maturity” for any variety; getting a tree larger than you want, and trying to trim it back every year after the first 5 or 10 is a bad idea. Also consider the proximity to the house or other structures, and underground plumbing.
