That would be what is known as a "Dog Vomit Fungus". It isn't a true fungus, but it does eat bacteria that would, otherwise, kill you plants.
Unfortunately, getting rid of it without getting rid of the underlying bacterial infection that it is eating will likely kill your plant.
You can treat both, or you can leave the organism to kill off the bacteria for you. In the case of the latter, it will disappear once there is no food left.
