what is the best and fastest growing ground cover for shaded areas?

I have a huge hard maple tree, and it shades a lot of my ground and I cannot get grass to grow. It just gets muddy when it rains, and I need to know what to plant that will keep it from being a muddy mess. I have a dog (lab), so I need something non toxic and hardy.
