Why Are My Dogwood Trees Bare of Leaves

I live in northern Virginia and have four dogwoods. Two are leafy with some dead branches. Two had very few flowers this spring and are now leafless. (July) I scraped the trunk with my fingernail and it is green, seems to be alive??

I’m not really sure what is happening to your trees. Assuming they are is the same 2-3 acre area, it probably isn’t environmental. I would suggest taking a sample of both a robust tree (leaves and twig) and a less vigorous tree(leaves and twig) to your local agricultural extension office for identification and recommendations. The fact that you have green underneath the bark is a good sign. Hopefully this is just a chance occurrence.
