getting rid of rats

We live in a 3-story condominium, built 1972, with rats in and out. How can we get rid of them? Traps have been set in place for years and do not fix this serious problem. The rats are now living inside the structural and inside bathroom walls. My neighbor caught a rat on her kitchen counter eating half her tomato! The association says that it is because we feed (hand feed only, no food is left out on property) the squirrels – i.e. no food is left out in either of the 3 bldgs.

The bldg structure is damaged because a water line is growing along the paint at ground level. I filled a hole at the baseline with concrete blocks (they sunk 6 inches), but all it has done is stopped the rainwater from running under my porch. The concrete walkways are deteriorated and cracked. There is mulch ALL over the condominium grounds and all around trees and bldgs. The association loves mulch. HELP, PLEASE!

I would review this article on “Landlord Liability for Unsafe Living Conditions”. If you can’t resolve the issue with your landlord your only recourse may be to file a complaint with state or local health or building inspectors.

Thank you so very much for your quick and sound advice.
My only question to you is how does this apply to condo ownership (not tenancy) as I am the unit owner. I have attempted to discourage the association from using anymore of the rat “delicacy” called MULCH, etc., but to no avail. A new delivery of mulch is due soon. Can you advise as to other sources of action, in addition to the good suggestions you have given. Does the same avenue of resolution apply as a unit owner? For us condo survivors, it’s good to know that “the sun always shines above the clouds! –Royal Park
