tulip and daffodil bulbs

Question

The former owner of my house in Connecticut planted bulbs in odd places and I want to move them. When is the best time to dig them up? Where and how do I store them or do I plant them now in the places where they will look much better next spring? I want the bulbs to stay as healthy as possible and have a cool basement/garage with storage space for them. Please advise me what to do and when to do it. Thank you.

The best time to move them to their new location is fall. Simply dig them up and plant them directly where you want them.

You will want to dig them up before the first frost. Remove any soil and you can place them in vermiculite or the like. I have used old panty hose and put the bulbs and vermiculite inside the legs and hung them in a cool, dry, dark place. Not pretty but it works.If the Garage/Basement isn’t heated they bulbs should be very happy in a cool, dry place with little to no light. Check with you local farm bureau. I have to dig both daffodils and tulips and place them in the fridge for a few months to give them a good chill as I live in Southern California. Enjoy your garden.
