trimming skullcaps

I have several skullcap plants which are about 2 feet tall but they are rather spindly. I would like to trim them about 3 to 4 inches to make them bushier and fuller. Is this too much trimming? When should it be done? I live in Boerne, Texas.

I also have a very large “golden showers” bush (about 6 feet tall) right in front of a window. It is getting leggy and spindly. I would like to trim it by about a foot all around. Is this too much trimming? When should it be done?

Thanks for your reply.

Prune back the Skullcap plant by one-half in early spring, before the new growth starts. Make the cuts just above a leave grouping.
In summer deadhead spent blossoms to encourage more blooms.
