Tree Completely Damaged By Caterpillars Or Other Bugs

The tree (I am attaching a photo of the tree and the bug) has been completely damaged by some pests or caterpillars. Lots of these bugs which look like caterpillars were being seen in the garden for a few weeks and the tree has changed colour to almost grey and most of the leaves have been eaten up. It seems that adjoining trees are also being affected. Can you please guide. This is in my sister’s garden.
