tree bark peeling and green bark

We have a maple tree that is at least 25 years old. The bark started peeling on the trunk in March. I bought something to spread on the exposed wood. However, the bark continued to peel. The wood seems fine and it is full of beautiful leaves. However, there is what looks like a green mold developing on the outside of the bark on the trunk. Please help me save this tree. It is very special.

Some varieties of maple do have “peeling” barks and are grown for this feature. It is a feature that often takes years to develop. As long as it looks healthy and you do not see any signs of fungus or mold (it will look like a powdery substance) you should not have to worry about the tree. If you are seeing a flaky type mold on the tree, then it is likely lichen. It is not harmful to the plant. Here is more information:
