Transplanting Part of a Gardenia Bush

My gardenia is more like a bush. It is over 6 ft. round and 6 ft. tall and has about 5 or 6 main branches going in the ground. I’m not sure if the root system is one big bulb or 5 or 6 different ones connected. I am also not sure how to transplant just one or two of the branches, or would that damage my plant. Please help.

Chances are it is one big plant that cannot be divided. But that being said, you can always check to see if this is the case. If there is more than one main trunk coming up from the ground, then there is more than one plant and it can be divided.
