Transplanting gardenias.

A friend has had several beautiful, healthy gardenia plants moved from her old house to a new house apparently by someone who did not know what they were doing and did not listen to what they were told. This is not the fall, the plants were not pruned before moving and the plants were delivered bare-rooted. They were then planted with peat moss and new soil. She is rightfully upset and worried about their survival. They were watered in. We are having a lot of rain right now. Can you give her any suggestions that might help these plants survive?

It is likely that they will survive on their own. When you start to see new growth, just prune off anything dead. This will help it to recover. Just keep an eye on them, and they should survive. If they start showing signs of infection, then you will want to put wettable sulfur into the soil. This will help keep away the infection until they can recover.
