Prepare an area for transplanting the divided plants. Work compost or other organic material into the soil with the spade. Loosen the soil to the same depth as the root systems on the original plants. Improved drainage speeds new root development.

Soak the bachelor’s buttons with water one or two days before dividing them. Cut their stems back to 6 inches to protect their moisture levels by minimizing leaf surfaces. Shorter stems also simplify root division.

Fill the bucket with water. Dig a circle around a plant 4 to 6 inches from its base with the spading fork, deep enough to work beneath the roots and loosen them. Leave as many roots intact as possible. Carefully lift the plant.

Grasp the plant at its base. Shake it gently to untangle the roots and dislodge loose soil, dead leaves and debris.

Trim broken root ends with the pruning shears. Place the divisions in the bucket of water. Transport them to their new location.

Plant the divisions to their original depth, tamping the soil around the roots to eliminate air pockets. Water them thoroughly.

Feed the divisions a week after transplanting. Use a liquid fertilizer applied according to the manufacturer’s directions.
