Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comI am planning to prune an 8 foot upright cedar into a topiary shaped with 3 balls. The trunk of the cedar will be bare between the balls. Should I treat the bare trunk areas (i e. with varnish) to inhibit regrowth or just trim off any new growth? Thank you.

Just trim any new growth. Sealing the trunk can result in trapping disease and fungus against the step, which could kill the tree.
