Thinning Out A Perrenial Garden

I have 48 foot by 4 foot full sun perennial garden that has become overgrown and sloppy looking due to spreading and self-seeding of the plants. This spring (zone 5) I\’d like to remove some of the plants entirely and group other same-plants together to create a more curated look and do it before it\’s sprouted into a jumbled mess. Any tips on how I can identify which just-emerging plants are which? And/or can you suggest a workable approach to accomplish this? Thank you for your input.

Hmm… This sounds like a job for your local extension service! You can take samples and photos up to them and they can help with identification and eradication. This link will help you to find the closest to you:

Try the app “Picture This”. A free plant identifier. All you need to do is snap a picture and it tells you all about the plant.
