Strange Plant

About 4 years ago while in a store, I purchased a bunch of packets of seeds in their own little packs, planting them in my flower bed. A plant grew unlike any I had ever seen. It had velvet-like, big leaves and grew like a tall cactus. After some time it even had a pretty bloom on top. This was the star of my yard, but well since that time I have moved and sold my home. Would love to plant another here at my new home. Please help identify this plant. By the way, the leaves were huge. I lived and still remain in Connecticut. It took no extra effort or care to grow this plant.
