smoke tree

I have 2 small smoke trees that, since October, I have been trying to get root growth. I trimmed their roots and put them into a bucket of water. I have not seen any root growth and am now wondering if water is the wrong way to go. Should I get root stimulator and get them into soil? I’m not sure what to do at this moment and I fear I have already lost one of them. Please help!!

For smoke trees, water may be too much for them. Putting them in soil would be better. Their roots need to breathe, and all water that does not have an aeration system will suffocate the roots. This is why soil is better. Once in soil, a root stimulator may help, as might bone meal.
