Is there a reason for the root exposure? Heavy rain, flooding, soil erosion?
The root system of a Smoke Tree is quite fibrous. You can add soil with some organic amendments to cover exposed roots. Apply 3 to 4 inches of hardwood mulch to help hold soil in place. Avoid the mulch touching the trunk of the tree.
